    Working from Rest

What does it feel like to be rested?

Yesterday I arrived back in Edmonton after two weeks in the Maritimes with Andrea and our kids. Landing at the airport, taking the bus and the train home, unpacking my things, having some lunch, and beginning to call the people I live and work alongside in this vibrant community, I felt different than I had two weeks before. I felt rested.

What’s the difference? More joy. More thoughtfulness. More availability and time to listen.

I hope and pray that the summer months allowed you to rest as well. It’s important to be reminded that we are children in God’s family before we start talking about roles, responsibilities, and work..

A friend once shared with me that in the Hebrew mind, the day starts at sundown. You see this in the creation story: there is evening, and then there is morning, one day. According to that schedule, the first thing I do every day is rest. Sleep. While God begins His day, (He who never sleeps) I drift off into peaceful sleep and let Him work. This idea has always brought me comfort. It reminds me that God is in control.

Fall is coming, and with it a whole bunch of exciting opportunities to grow and work together as God’s people. But before we get busy, let’s remember what it is to be rested and full of joy! Before we do anything, God has done His miraculous work of saving us, filling us with life, and making us whole. Let's begin from that place!
